Royal Roundup: Harry’s Birthday, Kate’s Contest, and William’s TED Talk

Welcome back, fellow royal watchers, to another roundup of all the news about our favorite family. We’re covering Harry, William, and Kate today, so grab a cup of tea and find out what’s up with the Windsors.

Royals Wish Harry a Happy Birthday

Harry’s 36th birthday was yesterday, and it was likely somewhat bittersweet. It was the first birthday he spent away from his family. It also puts him at the same age as Diana when she died.

Harry marked the occasion with a $130,000 donation to CAMFED, a charity that provides educational opportunities to girls in Africa. The organization had run a donation drive in honor of Harry and Meghan’s birthdays, which are about six weeks apart.

The Sussexes matched the donations with their own money. “No better way to celebrate what really matters,” the couple said in a brief statement.

Meanwhile, William and Kate shared a nice birthday message along with a photo of the three of them doing a foot race at an event. The photo (see above) was taken back when it seemed like the trio was inseparable.

The official Buckingham Palace account also shared a pic of Harry, as well as the same exact cake and balloon emojis as the Cambridges. Weird.

The picture shows Harry smiling down at his Granny, who happens to be the Queen of England.

Prince Charles and Camilla got in on the action with not one but two photos of Harry. In one, he’s sharing a laugh with his dad at the Invictus Games. However, @ClarenceHouse only used the cake emoji–where’s the balloon, Chaz??

None of them shared a single picture with Meghan in the frame. In fact, they mostly chose photos before Harry met his future wife. That seems to smack of subtle shade, does it not?

Kate’s Photography Contest a Success

Duchess Kate is a keen photographer and snaps many of the official portraits of her family. She channeled her passion into a photography contest in conjunction with the National Portrait Gallery.

The contest garnered more than 30,000 submissions, which Kate and the other judges winnowed down to just 100. Those are on view now at a virtual gallery. You can check out the poignant, funny, and fascinating photos from “Hold Still: A Portrait of Our Nation in 2020” online for free.

The Queen released an official statement praising both the Duchess of Cambridge and the winners of the contest. That’s a big stamp of approval for Elizabeth, and a major feather in Kate’s cap.

William to Talk Environmentalism

It’s easy to forget that the environment is one of William’s big causes. His Earthshot Prize hasn’t generated any headlines after the initial announcement. And during the pandemic, he and Kate have been more focused on mental health and childhood education.

But now William has a major TED talk scheduled where he’ll speak about environmental issues. The talk is part of a virtual conference called Countdown about climate change.

You’ll be able to watch it online on October 10th. William is part of a star-studded panel that includes multiple Marvel actors, Jaden Smith, and Al Gore. Honestly, it’s a shame that Charles isn’t speaking at the talk instead, since he has been working on environmental issues long before it was trendy.
