Cute Cambridge Photo Op Causes International Incident
Right now, we all need as much wholesome content as we can get. The Cambridges thought that’s what they were delivering over the weekend. Instead, they accidentally caused an international incident with Malta.
William, Kate, and the kids met with legendary naturalist Sir David Attenborough for a socially distant photo op. Say what you will about the duke and duchess, but those kids are cute. We love seeing new pictures of them, especially from the Kensington Palace social media accounts.
On Saturday, the Cambridges posted photos of the whole family plus a very special guest enjoying a meeting in the garden. Dressed all in shades of blue and grey, the family chatted with Attenborough and got a private screening of his new documentary.
A spokesperson for the duke and duchess claimed that William and Attenborough have a lot in common because of their environmentalism.
“With a shared passion for protecting the natural world, they continue to support one another in their missions to tackle some of the biggest environmental challenges our planet faces,” the statement read in part.
In fact, the celebrated naturalist and narrator of beloved documentaries is working with William on the Earthshot Prize. You know, that thing William made a huge fuss over announcing and then we never heard about it again.
The statement teased that we’ll be hearing more details about Earthshot “in the coming weeks.” It’s a miracle!
Big Tooth, Big Problems
During the meeting with William, Kate, and the kids, Attenborough gave George a gift. Namely, a fossilized tooth from the long-extinct megalodon shark.
The palace offered some background on the gift:
Sir David found the tooth on a family holiday to Malta in the late 1960s, embedded in the island’s soft yellow limestone which was laid down during the Miocene period some 23 million years ago. Carcharocles is believed to have grown to 15 metres in length, which is about twice the length of the Great White, the largest shark alive today.
So what’s the problem? Malta wanted that fossil back. “There are some artifacts that are important to Maltese natural heritage and which ended up abroad and deserve to be retrieved,” Maltese Culture Minister Jose Herrera said.
It’s important to note that Malta was a British colony until 1964. Like many nations who escaped British imperial rule, Malta would like its stuff back. The Crown and British cultural institutions have come under fire for holding onto the “Elgin” marbles, looted from Greece, for example, and the Koh-I-Noor diamond that originally came from India.
However, after Herrera spoke with newspaper reporters, the Maltese government backpedaled. Why did they change their tune? We’ll never know. George is obviously innocent in this exchange, but William should have known better than to accept a gift that could be potentially problematic. All of their gifts have to be logged and audited.
And honestly, does “Sir David” not know that it’s been illegal to smuggle fossils out of Malta for almost two decades? Sure, he got it in the 1960s. But he should have returned it to Malta long ago instead of giving it to the British royal family.
